Press Release-December 7, 2008

John R. Wood Runs for City Council

Primary & general election set for Ward 1 seat

GUTHRIE-John R. Wood, a political science professor at Rose State College, is running for the Guthrie City Council Ward 1 seat. This is Wood’s first bid for public office.

Currently, Wood serves the City of Guthrie as secretary for the Guthrie Transportation Authority and vice chair of the Guthrie Park Board. He also co-founded and now serves as vice-chair for First Capitol Neighborhood Solutions. The group promotes higher property values, lower crime and easier communication to city officials.

Wood said he is running for office because he has a strong commitment to community service and is eager to work at a higher level to make Guthrie a better place for all its citizens.

Recently, Wood’s efforts to improve ethics reform in Oklahoma has gained state-wide media attention. Wood proposed two amendments to state statutes. The first makes it transparent that legislators and other public officials receive gifts. A second outright bans lobbyists’ gifts to legislators.

“The amendments are a clean government measure. We’re giving the public officials a chance to win our trust back,” said Wood.

Also running for the Ward 1 seat with Wood are Justin Fortney and incumbent, Doug Hehn. There will be a primary election on February 10, 2009. Two candidate will continue to the April 7, 2009 election.
